Hoffman, NC history

Hoffman was named after the president of the Raleigh and Augusta Railroad Company, Richard C. Hoffman, back in the mid 1870s.  During this time Hoffman, NC was known for its thriving turpentine center located on the northside of the railroad.

John W. Butler served in dual positions as the first postmaster and mayor of the area.

Beginning with approximately 184 residents prior to the depression, selling of land and establishment of Camp Mackall, the population has now more than doubled with a population greater than 500.

This area remains a wonderful community with good people who care for each other and have great pride in their churches, school, fire and rescue department and community.

In 1958 two schools were dedicated for what then was a segregated community.  James Hutchins served as the first principal of the school designated for the white population.  This school sat on a 20 acre lot and supplied nine classrooms, Home EC and typing room, cafeteria, library and combo gym-auditorium.  The school graduated their final class 68 years later.
